Catriona Gray crowned Miss Universe 2018
Catriona Gray from Philippines has been crowned as Miss Universe 2018.
She faced stiff competition from 93 other contestants across the world.
The 24-year-old Filipino-Australian who failed to win the Miss World beauty pageant in 2016 finally conquered the ‘universe’.
This event took place at the Impact, Muang Thong Thani, in the Nonthaburi Province, Thailand.
She takes over the iconinc Mikimoto crown from South Africa’s Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters who won during the 2017 competition.
She also snatched the fourth Miss Universe title for the Philippines, after Gloria Diaz (1969), Margie Moran (1973), and Pia Wurtzbach (2015).
South Africa’s Tamaryn Green was the 1st Runner-up and Venezuela’s Sthefany Gutiérrez emerged as the 2nd Runner-up.
Miss Gray also shared her experience in the slums of Tondo, Manila.
“The life there is poor and it’s very sad. I’ve always taught myself to look for the beauty in it, to look for the beauty in the faces of the children and to be grateful. I would bring this aspect as a Miss Universe to see situations with a silver lining. To assess where I could give something, where I could provide something,” she said, drawing cheers from the audience.
The main ceremony was hosted by Steve Harvey.
Australia’s Francesca Hung won Miss Congeniality, while Laos’ On-anong Homsombath, and Albania’s Trejsi Sejdini won Best National Costume and Photogenic, respectively.
